Is it a wiener, frank, red hot, frankfurter or a hot dog?
July is National Hot Dog Month. And no matter what you call them, the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council predicts that over 7 billion will be consumed by Americans this summer.
Not only are they known by many different names, they are dressed in many ways.
Arizona wraps them with bacon and tops them off with tomatoes, beans, onions, mustard, mayo and jalapenos.
Folks in Seattle smear them with cream cheese and top with grilled onions.
New Yorkers like mustard, sauerkraut and tomato-sauced onions.
New Jersey dogs are covered with stewed potatoes and brown mustard.
Chicago hot dogs are dressed up with onion, tomato, dill pickle, sweet relish, mustard, peppers and celery salt.
Coney dogs are at native to lower Michigan with chili, onions and mustard. But the coney may change as you travel north, from Detroit (thin chili) to Flint (drier, powdery chili).
No matter how you celebrate, it is how you dress it , name it and where you are that makes the hot dog diverse. But like Americans, inside they are really all the same.
